Training Methods

There are many ways to train. The most important methods include the following.

  • Sparring
  • Drills
    • Fan Sau
  • Shadow Boxing

Example training methodology

  • Freestyle Partnerwork: Use Sticky hands & Push Hands & Sparring to develop sensitivity and instinct.
  • Focus Drills: Build focused familiarity with specific energies via Focus Drills. This is a lower priority than the freestyle partnerwork but still adds value as part of a comprehensive training regime.
  • Shadowboxing: Stay fluid & creative. Focus on natural flow. This is the best solo work without equipment, and remains vital to do occasionally even if you always have access to partners and equipment.
  • Cosmographic Congruence Analysis: Mentally reflect on patterns, cross-referencing your natural instinctive flow with the cycles & patterns of the Yi Jing or your favourite cosmographic system, purely for inspiration — don’t force congruence — feeling always takes priority. This is more of a novelty stage than anything. It’s not required, and you may feel it doesn’t add value — it may even be an unhealthy distraction. This is for you to decide and moderate appropriately.
