These are the safest and most critical Takedowns (Sweeps, Slams & Throws).
These are Judo and Shuai Jiao basics. Also found in some schools of Aikido and JKD, plus many other martial arts, especially grappling oriented arts.
- Ippon Seoi Nage 一本背負投 (Chuāi 揣) (throw over shoulder) – this is the most critical throw as it’s also the best defence of a rear choke.
- Osoto Otoshi 大外刈 (Qiè Zi 切子) (throat-strike-assisted slam over back leg while flanking) – this is the safest slam technique, for the person executing it, as it enables you to maintain a good stance, posture and guard, with all vitals covered. It’s also the second best defence to the rear choke – a good plan B in case you’re unable to straighten your back enough to throw them over your shoulder.
- Hip Toss from Headlock (from Side Choke or Rear Choke position). Sometimes you’ll have flanked someone, and got them in a chokehold headlock, ready to finish them by committing to a rear choke or side choke, but you may not want to tie yourself up because they may be about to draw an edged weapon or may have accomplices ready to jump in, so you may wish to finish them more quickly & cleanly and get away asap – this is an ideal time to execute a hip toss from standing side choke or rear choke headlock position. Just be careful to save this move for the most extreme of circumstances as it can easily snap their neck before they hit the ground when executed aggressively.
